How Can I Keep My Immune System Strong?

These days, the news is filled with all sorts of tips on preventing illness. You know to practice social distancing, wear a mask in public and disinfect surfaces regularly.

But one thing we rarely hear about is how to boost the immune system. Since that’s an added step we can all take, let our team at AFC Urgent Care Clemson share some insight about how to keep it going strong.

What Does the Immune System Do?

OK, first things first, what exactly is the immune system? The immune system is your body’s defense mechanism against germs and other invaders. When a germ enters the body, your immune system kicks into high gear.

If your immune system is at its best, it can help you fend off illness. But in some cases, your immune system diminishes and your defenses drop.

Signs of a Weakened Immune System

  • You feel overly stressed and overwhelmed.
  • You develop colds and other illnesses often.
  • You experience GI troubles, including diarrhea or constipation.
  • You have wounds that heal very slowly.
  • You feel fatigued all the time.

What Can I Do to Boost My Immunity?

While you aren’t totally in control of your immune system, there are steps you can take to help promote a healthy immune system. These steps align with the basics of healthy living.

Aim to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day on most days of the week, eat a balanced diet, get between seven and nine hours of quality sleep each night, don’t smoke, and limit your alcohol consumption. What you eat is especially important—there are actually some foods known to protect your immune system.

Foods That Strengthen the Immune System

  • Spinach
