Should I Be Worried About Getting a Fever If I Have the Flu?
The flu is not a fun illness, to say the least. Almost everyone who gets the flu feels terrible, achey and feverish. Even if you do feel this way, though, there are ways to feel better!
Our AFC Urgent Care Clemson team provides more info on this surging virus in South Carolina below, so keep reading!
What Is the Flu?
The flu is caused by the influenza virus, which is an illness that attacks your respiratory system, including the lungs, nose and throat. The flu typically doesn’t cause serious complications, but older adults, young children, people with compromised immune systems and pregnant women are at a higher risk of developing serious complications.
Like we said earlier, the flu is surging in South Carolina right now, so it’s important to be on the lookout for its symptoms. We’ve listed them below.
Common Flu Symptoms
- Fever
- Aches and pains throughout the body
- Headaches
- Chills
- Sore throat
- An extreme feeling of fatigue
- A persistent and worsening cough
- Stuffy or runny nose
How Serious Is a Flu Fever?
Usually, it’s not a huge cause for concern. Although most flu fevers are quite high and are over 100ºF, a flu fever shouldn’t cause you to worry too much if you deal with it quickly.
Even if you don’t have a fever after testing positive for the flu, which is common in mild flu cases, it’s important to take this virus seriously, no matter the symptoms. If you get sick with the flu, we’ve listed some things you need to do below.
What to Do If You Get the Flu
- Wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of the virus. Aim to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds each time.
- Cover coughs and sneezes with your arm.
- Drink lots of water to stay hydrated.
- Get plenty of rest.
